Stevon Smith

A native of Shreveport, Louisiana, Stevon received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Urban Forestry Management from Southern University in 1995. His first stop in Texas was as the Urban Forester for the City of Odessa. When the grant-funded position ended, he moved to Dallas to work for Landscape Resources, Inc. as an Area Manager supervising five maintenance crews and over thirty-five commercial properties. Missing the life of an urban forester, Stevon accepted a Staff Forester position with the city of Fort Worth. For 3 years, he was responsible for various volunteer and service projects including coordinating Arbor Day Programs, coordinating and monitoring community street tree planting projects, and managing the hazardous tree abatement program. In 2002, Stevon received his Masters of Arts Degree in Organization Management with a concentration in Conflict Resolution Management, and became an ISA Certified Arborist.

After leaving Fort Worth, Stevon was hired as the City Arborist for McKinney, Texas. During his time in McKinney, the city participated in its first NeighborWoods projects, Arbor Day programs, and received recognition as a Tree City USA. Stevon is now the Landscape Administrator for the City of Mansfield. He is responsible for reviewing landscape plans for compliance and enforcing Mansfield Natural Resource Management Ordinance.

Stevon has served in many capacities for the Cross Timbers Urban Forestry Council, formally known as the Gateway Urban Forestry Council including Director, the Secretary-Editor (2001), President (2002-2003), and Past-President (2003-2004). As Secretary-Editor, he revamped the Quarterly Newsletter (Tree Notes). During his term as President, Stevon facilitated the organizations name change, mission and reorganization. Stevon is a member of Society of American Foresters, International Society of Arboriculture and the Society of Municipal Arborist.
